. The picture tells the story of a peasant family from Estremadura who, as many others, lives under and is subjected to the landowning class ruling over them through the control of resources. The members of the family dream with the possibility of escaping poverty, of learning to read and write, to express themselves. Those are the means affording a forward tread. They dare to dream and later they will dare to try. But their life has been a continuous renouncing and obeying. Their fate has been preordained for many generations, and only something violent, entirely new and beyond the daily routine, will smash up the regular life to which they are condemned. USA Running time 105 minutes Country Spain Language Spanish This film will shake you to the bottom. It is truly unusual to come across a movie where deep sociological, psychological and historical issues are dealt with so soberly. This movie shows quietly all the horror and brutality of rural (feudal) life in southern Spain during the hard years of the Franco dictatorship. This film, and the novel it is based on (by M. Delibes) pays humble homage to the history of millions who were silently oppressed by the class of rural landowners that supported Franco. Now, what performances by Juan Diego, Alfredo Landa and Paco Rabal. I really recommend it to anyone interested in realist art.

Meant to reflect the harsh realities of segments of society in 1960s, Franco-era Spain, this slow-moving, drawn-out story is about a struggling, impoverished family who work on the estate of a wealthy aristocrat. Paco (Alfredo Landa) is the head of his small family who constantly tries to placate his irascible overlords and also teaches them how to hunt birds. His wife Régula (Terele Pávez) is as subservient as Paco. The family is rounded out by a mute, crippled daughter, a son away at military service, and Azarias (Francisco Rabal), an uncle whose mental stability is in question. These individuals are contrasted with Señor Iván (Juan Diego) who rules over them with a detached incomprehension that brands the family as not much different than the animals he hunts. The señor has no compunction about shooting Azarias's pet bird, or forcing Paco to continue with a bird hunt even though he has fallen and broken his leg. Given the insane behavior of the aristocratic Iván, the half-crazy Azarias might be the only one to get through to him on his own level. The 1984
Cannes Film Festival
awarded Alfredo Landa and Francisco Rabal a shared "Best Actor" Award for their roles in this film. EBAY236
