Description
New with tag and original description in box as shown--old stock, retired Roman empress coin hinged bangle bracelet from the Metropolitan Museum of Art NY collection. Rich 14kt gold overlay; and bezel set reproduction antique coin flanked by topaz-colored glass cabochons as shown. Slide lever closure. Signed. Approximate measurements: 2" x 2.25" wrist opening; coin and setting 1.5" x 1". Note we also have the matching necklace and earrings in our store while available.From the MMA description: "The gold aureus became a regular part of Roman coinage in the time of Julius Caesar (49-44 B. C.), and he was the first Roman to mint coins bearing his own portrait. After the emperor Augustus (ruled 27 B.C.-A.D. 14) received authority to issue coinage. Roman coins became inextricably linked with the emperor's sovereignty. Thereafter, coins produced at the imperial mints bore portraits of the ruling emperor and his family, serving to circulate the ruler's image throughout the empire. The Museum's collection includes a gold aureus minted at Rome during the reign of the emperor Antonius Pius (ruled A.D. 138-161). The coin shows on the obverse a draped bust of his wife, the empress Faustian, whose death and deification in A.D. 141 the coin commemorates..."
