Isaac Herzog, b. 1888 in Poland. Best known as the first Chief Rabbi of Ireland (1921 to 1936). Beginning his Irish career in Belfast at the height of the Easter Rising, he was a vocal supporter of an Irish Republic independent from Great Britain. He later succeeded Rav Kook as theAshkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel. Rabbi Herzog was a widely-published authority on halakha and Jewish statehood. At great personal risk, he rescued Jewish babies from the horrors of WWII, and entreated the United States government for intervention on behalf of Jews suffering in Europe. Rabbi Herzog died in Israel in 1959. His son Chaim became the 6th President of Israel.
