About Yaacov (Jacob) Ben Dov (Bendov).
Yaacov Ben Dov (1882-1968) was born in Palin a town near Kiev (Ukraine). He studied at the Kiev Academy of Arts. In 1907 he moved to Israel (Palestine). In 1910 he graduated from Bezalel Academy of Arts in Jerusalem (founded by Boris Schatz in 1906) and stayed in Bezalel as the School’s photographer and teacher. In 1912 Ben Dov and Schatz established a Hebrew film industry in Eretz Isroel. During the WWI Ben Dov served as a photographer in the Austrian brigade posted in Palestine within the Ottoman Army. After the war he settled down in Jerusalem until his death in 1968.
Among his huge volume of works, he produces several hundred postcards and about a half dozen albums with view of Palestine landmarks.
Yaacov Ben Dov is no doubt the father of the Hebrew Cinema in Eretz Isroel (Palestine's first documentary-maker) and a great photographer, who took pictures of the celebs of his time such as General Allenby, W. Churchill, A. Balfour, High Commissioner Sir Herbert Samuel, and others along with portraits of common people, children plants, groves of trees, schools, harvests reaped etc.
