French Antique Manicure Travel Set – Sterling Handles – 1880
An antique French boxed manicure set from the 1880’s, with sterling silver handles (except for the scissors) and a gentleman’s sterling silver nail cleaner. The blades and tips are in stainless steel.
The manicure pieces include a pair of sharp scissors in steel (3 ½ inches long), a cuticle pusher (3 5/8 inches long) and a nail file and a rare pair of tweezers (both 4 ½ inches long).
Also included is a two-piece gentleman’s nail cleaner – from the Art Deco period- in sterling silver, which would have been slipped into the vest pocket of evening clothes and very discreetly used to ensure perfectly clean nails (especially while dancing). The holder has a very slight indention on one side
All manicure pieces – except the scissors – all have a tiny boar’s head hallmark, the French mark for sterling silver.
The box measures 5 5/8 inches by 3 ¾ inches and would have been easily slipped in a lady’s travel bag. The box closes well, but there is a little bit of warping on one of the corners.
